The two storeyed haveli at Ali Manzil, Kucha Pandit, Old Delhi was home to Hamida Sultan, Khujistan Sultan and Akhtar Ara, the three sisters of the late President Fakruddin Ali Ahmed. From the 1950’s, Ali Manzil was an Urdu teaching-learning centre for underprivileged girls of the old city. The Haveli was also the venue for the Yaum-e-Ghalib, an annual event that marked the birth anniversary of Mirza Ghalib. Dr. A. Ali of Hamdard University recalls how Ahmed Ali wrote his famous Delhi novel, “Twilight in Delhi” here, and the description of the house of the novel’s hero, Mir Nihal, was actually based on the Haveli.
